Jimmy G. Mai Morillon is a Mexican-Vietnamese American writer from Houston, Texas. He writes novels, plays, poetry, stories, and whatever else refuses to leave him alone.

Born to Mexican and Vietnamese immigrant parents, Mai grew up in Alief, where he first began writing stories as a child. He studied literature and theater at the University of Houston-Downtown, writing for the university newspaper and serving as editor of The Bayou Review. After college, he founded The Midnight Theatre Company and produced his original plays Case Number 105 and The Brush.

Writing has never been the only life Mai has lived. He has taught in Houston's North Side, worked as a school librarian, earned a master's degree in library science from Sam Houston State University, and spent years working in educational technology. Through all of it, he kept writing, collecting stories, filling notebooks, and paying attention.

His work is drawn to family, memory, migration, death, love, place, and the quiet strangeness of ordinary life. His Mexican and Vietnamese inheritance finds its way into the work, sometimes directly and sometimes from the shadows.

Mai published his first book, By Starlight, in 2025. His subsequent books include After the Water and Perpendicularly Peculiar Pursuits. He continues to write across fiction, poetry, theater, and nonfiction, with more books and plays on the way.

He lives with his family and their dogs.
